Grounding and Protection: What They Actually Mean and Why I Only Half-Believe in One of Them
If you've spent any time in intuitive or psychic development spaces you've heard this repeated like a law of physics: always ground and protect before you do any work.
Always. Non-negotiable. Dire consequences implied.
I want to push back on part of that — specifically the protection piece — because I think the way it usually gets taught is rooted in fear rather than anything I've actually observed to be true.
Grounding: Yes, Do This
I've written elsewhere about my actual grounding practice — the physical techniques I use to anchor back into my body after immersive work. That piece covers the how. The short version here: grounding is real, it's useful, and the reason it works isn't mystical. Intuitive work asks you to drop your ordinary analytical focus and pay attention to subtle internal signals. That's an absorbed state, and coming out of it without deliberately closing can leave you scattered or oddly emotional. Grounding is just the intentional return to baseline. Feet on the floor, breath in the body, present in the room. Do it. It helps.
What I want to spend more time on is protection — because that's where I think the conversation goes sideways.
Protection: The Part That Needs Examining
Most teaching on psychic protection is built on a premise I don't accept: that there are dark or malevolent entities out there looking to attach themselves to you, and that without the right energetic shield you're vulnerable.
Here's my honest position: I don't believe in evil spirits. And I think if you look at that belief carefully, it doesn't hold together.
If you believe in evil spirits, you have to believe in spirit guides — in beings whose purpose is to accompany and protect you. So the question becomes: why would your guides ever allow a dark entity to attach to you? What exactly are they doing while this supposed malevolent energy is moving in? The same framework that produces the fear of dark attachment also produces the protection against it. You can't have one without the other, and if you believe the guide side of that equation, the fear side loses most of its power.
Beyond that, I think evil is a human physical trait, not a spiritual one. When someone crosses over, whatever complexity and darkness existed in them as a human being — the wounds, the ego, the harm they caused — that doesn't make the crossing with them. The people who come through in my readings still have their personalities. They're still recognizable as themselves. But they're closer to Source, which is pure love. Unadulterated. Without the distortion that living in a human body with a human nervous system and human fear produces. I don't experience evil in spirit communication. I experience love at varying levels of clarity.
So no, I'm not going to teach you to protect yourself against dark entities. I have no evidence they exist in the way they're described, and fear-based teaching is the opposite of how I work.

What "Stuck" Actually Is
That said — after difficult readings, or sessions where someone's grief was particularly heavy, I sometimes notice something that feels like residual energy. Not evil. Not an attachment. Stuck.
The distinction matters. What I think is actually happening is that I've been in deep emotional resonance with a client or with the spirit person coming through, and some of that connection lingers. It's my own empathic and clairsentient system staying open a little longer than I need it to. That's a real thing and it's worth addressing — but the solution isn't a protective ritual against dark forces. It's just clearing the channel.
A walk does it for me. A shower does it. Fresh air, physical movement, a deliberate return to my own body and my own emotional baseline. Nothing elaborate. Nothing rooted in fear. Just: close the session, come back to yourself, let what isn't yours move through and out.
That's not a protection practice. That's good energetic hygiene — the same way you'd wash your hands after working with something that doesn't belong to you, not because you're afraid of what it is, but because it's time to let it go.
What I Would Actually Suggest Instead of Protection Rituals
Rather than shielding yourself from something threatening, think about it this way: what helps you stay clearly yourself during the work?
For some people that's a deliberate opening and closing — a breath at the start that signals you're shifting into a receptive state, and a breath at the end that signals you're done. For some it's a brief grounding practice before and after. For some it's as simple as the physical act of washing hands or stepping outside when a session is complete.
What you're not doing is defending against attack. You're maintaining the distinction between what's yours and what you're holding for someone else during the work. That's a real and useful thing to develop. It just doesn't require an enemy.

The Test That Matters
If you have a protection practice that feels meaningful to you, the question worth asking is: do you feel better when you do it versus when you skip it? If yes, keep it — whether the mechanism is psychological, energetic, or some combination, the effect in your own experience is real data. If it's purely a fear response — if you do it because you're afraid of what might happen without it — it's worth examining what you actually believe and whether that belief is serving you.
Fear is not a practice. Clarity is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need psychic protection? I don't teach protection as defense against evil entities because I don't believe that's what you're actually protecting against. What's worth developing is the ability to stay clearly yourself during intuitive work — to hold a distinction between your own emotional baseline and what you're receiving from others. That's a real skill, and it's different from fearing an attack.
What about dark energy or negative entities? My position is that evil is a human trait, not a spiritual one. People who cross over move closer to Source — to pure love — and that doesn't coexist with malevolence the way it does in human experience. What feels dark or heavy in spiritual work is usually grief, pain, or unresolved emotion — all of which deserve compassion, not protection.
What do you do when a session feels stuck or heavy afterward? A walk. A shower. Fresh air. Something physical that brings me back to my own body and my own baseline. I'm clearing residual empathic connection, not warding off attachment. The distinction matters because the solution follows from the actual cause.
What if I genuinely feel drained after spiritual work? That's worth paying attention to — not as evidence of attack, but as information about your own energetic boundaries and how long you can work sustainably. Consistent drainage is a sign to look at your practice, your preparation, and your closing routines rather than to build a more elaborate shield.
