Should You Tell a Medium Anything Before the Reading? The Honest Answer

The short answer is no. Tell me nothing. I want to go into each reading completely blind. I do not want to know what your hopes are for the reading. Or the questions you want answered. I want nothing - zip - zilch - nada - bupkiss.

Before a session with me, I do not want your loved one’s name. I do not want a photo. I do not want to know the relationship, the cause of death, or what you are hoping to hear. Nothing. The reason is simple: the less you give me going in, the more any specific detail I bring through actually means, for both of us.

Why I ask for nothing

When you hand a medium names, relationships, or context before a reading, you have given away the answer key. Anything that comes back after that is harder to trust, even when the contact is genuine, because neither of you can prove the information did not come from your own words. The proof in evidential mediumship lives in the gap between what you told me and what I knew anyway. Close that gap and you lose the proof, even if everything else is real.

Going in with nothing also protects you from something else. Asking for names, photos, or details before a reading is not standard practice for ethical mediums. Legitimate mediums do not need that information to connect. When a practitioner asks for it upfront, you are not automatically dealing with a fraud, but you are increasing your risk. Unethical practitioners use pre-reading information to construct a convincing session. If you have already handed over the key details, you have no way to evaluate what they actually brought through on their own. Healthy skepticism and discernment are not insults to the process. They are part of it.

The cleanest reading is one where the client did nothing to influence the outcome. That is not just better for you. It is better for me. When something specific lands after you gave me nothing to work with, we both know where it came from.

What you can share

Withholding does not mean sitting in silence for an hour. There is a difference between context that helps the session run and information that hands me the result.

It is fine to tell me how much experience you have with readings, whether this is your first, and whether you are nervous or skeptical. None of that lets me guess a name. It is fine to confirm a detail once I have offered it first, because that is how evidence gets verified. It is fine to ask how the session works.

What changes things is leading with the content: naming who you want to reach, describing them, explaining the situation you want addressed. Hold that back until the reading has earned it.

What a good medium does with the silence

A medium who works evidentially wants you to withhold. I am not hoping you will fill the silence with clues. I am relying on the opposite.

My job is to bring through the specific detail before you confirm anything. Your job is to tell me whether it lands once it is on the table. If a reader is uncomfortable with you holding back, or keeps steering you toward sharing more before they have offered anything concrete, pay attention to that. It is worth noticing.

A confident evidential medium treats your withholding as the starting point, not an obstacle. It is the condition that lets the work prove itself.

How to set it up

You do not need a speech. Before the session, simply do not volunteer anything: no names, no photos, no context about who you are hoping to reach. Let me lead.

During the reading, your job is to respond to each statement honestly. Yes, no, or I don’t know. That feedback is not feeding me information, it is confirming or clearing what I have already brought through. It is how evidence gets verified and how I know whether to keep pulling on a thread or let it go. A reading where you say nothing throughout is not a cleaner reading. It is an unworkable one.

What you are withholding is the setup, not the response. Do not tell me who you want before we begin. Do tell me honestly whether what I bring through lands once we are in it.

What you get in return is a reading you can stand behind afterward. When a specific name or shared fact lands after you deliberately gave me nothing to work with at the start, you will not have to wonder whether you led me there. You will know you did not.
