Mediumship is often seen as a mysterious gift, a bridge between the physical world and the spirit realm. Yet, behind this gift lies a profound journey of surrender, trust, and relentless pursuit of truth. I have learned that mediumship is not about controlling the communication or forcing messages to appear. Instead, it is about relinquishing control and allowing the spirit person to guide the process. This journey requires deep self-awareness, emotional openness, and ongoing personal development. Without these, the connection risks becoming unclear or even harmful.
In this post, I want to share my experience and insights about how mediumship demands surrender and trust, why understanding our own feelings is essential, and how personal growth shapes the quality of communication. I will also explain why clients should be mindful when choosing a medium, as not all have done the inner work necessary to serve Spirit ethically and effectively.
Surrendering Control to Spirit
When I first began practicing mediumship, I thought I had to lead the conversation, to direct Spirit to say what I wanted or expected. I always looked for certain information that I thought the client wanted to hear. This need to impress with big facts like names, caused me to take control of the communication and also doubt every piece of information that I was actually receiving. This approach quickly proved false. Spirit communication is not a performance or a script to follow. It is a living, breathing exchange that requires me to step back and let go of control.
I learned to treat Spirit as the shepherd and guide during the communication process. This means trusting that Spirit knows where to go and what to reveal. They know better than I do what my client needs to hear. They often know better than my client as well! My role is to hold the space, stay open, and allow the messages to flow naturally. This surrender is not passive. It is an active, conscious choice to release my ego’s need to control and instead become a clear channel.
This act of surrender builds trust—not only in Spirit but also in myself. Trust that I can handle whatever comes through, even if it challenges my expectations or comfort zone. Trust that Spirit’s guidance is always for the highest good, even when the messages are difficult. And as a natural control freak, this has been one of the hardest lessons I've had to learn!

Allowing Spirit to guide the path during mediumship
Connecting with Our Feelings to Understand Spirit
Mediumship is not just about hearing words or seeing images. It is deeply emotional and intuitive act that I believe is the ultimate form of surrender and service. Over time, I realized that the key to understanding Spirit’s communication lies in getting in touch with my own feelings. Afterall, my experiences and feelings are what Spirit have to use when communicating through me. If I don't understand my feelings, I'm certainly not going to be able to understand Spirit's!
When Spirit speaks, the messages often come wrapped in emotions—grief, love, relief, or sometimes confusion and many more in between. If I ignore or suppress these feelings within myself, I miss the true meaning behind the communication. Instead, I learned to welcome my emotions as part of the process. I allow myself to experience:
What am I feeling right now?
How does this emotion connect to the message?
Is this feeling coming from me or from spirit?
By tuning into my emotional state, I can better interpret the subtle nuances of Spirit’s guidance. This emotional awareness also helps me stay grounded and present, which is essential for clear communication.
The Importance of Personal Development in Mediumship
One of the most important lessons I have learned is that personal development is not optional for a medium. It is an essential skill to cultivate. Without deep self-understanding, we risk carrying unresolved trauma into our sessions and unintentionally burdening clients.
I have seen mediums who have not done their inner work struggle with this. They may unknowingly "trauma dump" on clients, mixing their own pain with Spirit’s messages which colors the experience to be something other than the truth. This can confuse or harm the person seeking guidance. Clients deserve to know that not all mediums have reached the same level of self-awareness, and this affects the quality of their mediumship.
The saying “others can only meet you as deeply as you have met yourself” holds true in mediumship. Spirit can only use the tools we offer. If we do not know ourselves at a deep level, Spirit can only touch the surface of what we are comfortable expressing.
Ethical Mediumship Requires Ongoing Self-Work
Ethical mediums are always striving to understand their own traumas, weaknesses, and strengths. This ongoing self-work allows us to hold the container for Spirit with awareness and care. Mediumship is the ultimate act of surrender and containment. This feels like a contradiction, but it is the highest skill we could embody in our work. You have enough trust to let go entirely, but enough awareness in the moment to hold a container for Spirit to work through. A car can't drive without a road!
This balance requires discipline, humility, and trust.
I myself have been in therapy for years, spend time meditating daily, and have worked many past traumas to acceptance, like becoming sober. If any of you have dealt with alcoholism yourself or with a loved one, you understand the deep healing required to gain and maintain sobriety. It is not easy, but my mediumship is what helped guide me and inspire me to become sober when I did. And I am forever grateful.

Creating a safe and grounded space for mediumship practice
What Clients Should Know When Choosing a Medium
If you are seeking a medium, it is important to be aware that not all practitioners have done the deep inner work required for ethical and clear communication. Some may still carry unresolved trauma or emotional blocks that affect their ability to serve spirit and clients well. In fact, most of us do have unresolved traumas. We are human! I want everyone to realize that going into any reading with any medium. We are not infallible.
Here are some tips for clients:
Notice if the medium creates a safe, grounded space for communication.
Trust your intuition about the medium’s energy and presence.
Understand that mediumship is a process of exploration and trust, not a guaranteed or scripted experience.
Choosing a medium who has committed to self-awareness and ethical practice increases the chances of receiving clear, compassionate, and meaningful messages.
Mediumship as a Journey of Trust and Exploration
Mediumship is not a destination but a continuous journey. It requires us to surrender our need for control, trust Spirit’s guidance, and explore our inner truth with courage. This journey challenges us to face our own shadows and embrace our strengths.
For me, mediumship has become a path of healing and growth. Each session is an opportunity to deepen my connection with Spirit and with myself. It is a reminder that the quality of communication depends on how deeply I have met myself. And not only met myself, but accepted myself as a friend and partner. It is self love as it was originally meant to be and not this bumper sticker cheerleader "Get a massage" kind of commercialized self love that is popular today. It is deep, raw, and real.
If you are drawn to mediumship, whether as a practitioner or a client, remember that this work calls for honesty, openness, and respect. It is a sacred exchange that thrives on trust and personal integrity.
