What Happens in a Medium Reading: The Real Experience, Not the Hollywood Version

What Actually Happens in a Mediumship Reading with me (No Crystal Balls, No Drama)

If your only reference point for mediumship is what you've seen on television or in movies, set all of that aside right now. Because what actually happens in a real evidential medium reading looks almost nothing like the dramatic, theatrical version Hollywood sells. There are no crystal balls. No dark rooms with flickering candles. No eye-rolling, no creepy voices, no performance.

Here's what there actually is.

Before the Reading: Do Basically Nothing

The most important thing you can do before a reading is absolutely nothing. Don't send me information about who you're hoping to hear from. Don't tell me the backstory. Don't prep me. The entire value of an evidential reading rests on the fact that the information comes from spirit — not from you.

This allows me to be a clear channel with no influence when connecting. And it allows you to have trust that you didn't provide me any information that I could do a "cold" or a "warm" reading from. And spirit honestly likes connecting through this clear and uninterrupted channel as well!

The First Few Minutes: How I Connect

When we begin, I take a few slow breaths and shift my awareness. The best way I can describe it is like putting my awareness to the space behind me. Just noticing the space there allows me to know I am putting my attention on the spirit world. Just like a mom can have a conversation on the phone and then think about her kids playing in the backyard and suddenly she is aware of their conversation. Simple and straightforward. Through over a decade of daily development, I've learned to move between that awareness with intention. The first thing I do is establish who's coming through — this is relationship to you and a couple of pieces of evidence that the spirit person wants to talk about that you can validate and we are off to the races!

During the Reading: What I'm Actually Experiencing

Spirit communicates through multiple sensory channels at once. I experience clairvoyance (images on a mental screen), clairsentience (physical sensations and emotions in my body), clairaudience (words, names, phrases), and claircognizance (a direct knowing that arrives without explanation). My job is to sort through that incoming information and deliver it clearly — without editorializing, without guessing, without filling in gaps I don't actually have.

But it's a mystical art that spirit is using the information that is accessible through me to deliver the information that is needed. My job is to get out of the way and allow that information to flow through me while also being active enough in the communication as I am the one making sense of the information that is coming through so you can understand who I have.

What You Should Do During the Reading

Your job is to validate. Yes or no. Accurate, partially accurate, or not accurate Short responses are ideal — the less you feed me, the stronger the reading tends to be. And if something doesn't fit, say so. Don't force it. An honest "that doesn't make sense to me" is more useful than a polite stretch.

In fact, a no doesn't mean I'm wrong. I know, I KNOW that sounds egotistical. But I trust the information that is given to me. If you tell me no, a couple of things are happening: 1) I'm using words that you don't think are right. For example, I call your father stubborn. You tell me no because he wasn't stubborn with you. I go back to the information and feel a brother and I say "You have a brother correct?" "Yes" "Then you would understand your father was stubborn with your brother" "OH! Yeah. The two of them butt heads all of the time" (see, I was right! Just wrong person) 2) I have the wrong relationship. For example "Your father is stubborn" "No" "Oh, then you understand you have a grandfather in spirit who was stubborn" "Oh yeah. That old coot!" (HA! right again with stubborn, just wrong person) 3) I'm talking about your father and I mistake him for being in spirit but he's here "You understand a father in spirit who was stubborn" "My father is alive" "Ah, but he is stubborn, yes?" "Oh man, SO stubborn" etc etc

It's MY job as the medium to understand where I went wrong in my understanding that spirit is giving to me. Of course this is in partnership with you and spirit.

What's Happening on the Other Side

They're eager. More often than not, the people who come through arrive ready — with specific things they want me to tell you. They retain their personalities fully. If your dad was sarcastic in life, he'll be sarcastic in the reading. If your mom was dramatic, buckle up.

One thing that surprises a lot of clients: spirit often leads with mundane, seemingly trivial details. A specific pair of shoes. A kitchen gadget. A running joke nobody outside the family would know. These aren't random — they're deliberate evidence. The more specific and unpredictable the detail, the stronger the proof of connection. But beyond that, what spirit brings forward is what your message is pertaining to.

I've had grandparents come through with a loving relationship and I feel that you are also looking for that same kind of love. Or a mother who was a piano teacher and you have been craving getting back to playing the piano and having an impact on your community. Or a sister who was really sick and you took care of her and she wasn't super nice to you as she got close to crossing over and she wants to apologize for being stubborn and rude.

After the Reading: What to Expect

You'll probably feel a mix — relief, sadness, joy, exhaustion, sometimes all four at once. Give yourself time to process. Many clients find that the reading continues to unfold over the days and weeks that follow, as memories surface and details click into place. I record every Zoom reading and encourage you to listen back. You will catch things the second time that you completely missed in real time.

What a Reading Is Not

A mediumship reading is not a substitute for therapy (though I know it has helped a lot of people in their grieving!). It's not a performance (even though I'm on a stage sometimes connecting!). It's not a guarantee of who will come through. And it is absolutely not fortune-telling (just probables for the future discussed maybe, sometimes, don't get your hopes up lol)

The purpose of a reading is communication — with the people you've lost. To understand that we continue on. That their love is connected to you always. And that they never forgot you. And that they are doing just fine on the other side. Full heart, full love, full soul.
