Why Some Medium Readings Go Deeper Than Others: The Honest Factors

Jul 22
7 min read

If you've had more than one medium reading in your life (or more than one from the same medium), you've probably noticed they're not all the same quality. Some are specific, layered, and moving. Others feel generic, scattered, or like the medium is working hard to make something fit. Sometimes the same medium delivers very different results on different days.

People who notice this variation deserve an honest answer about why it happens — including the parts that don't reflect well on mediums as a profession.

It Takes Three

A mediumship reading involves three parties: Spirit, the medium, and you. All three have to show up for the best communication to happen. Most conversations about reading quality focus entirely on the medium — are they skilled, are they real, are they cold reading — and that's a fair place to start. But it's only one third of the picture. To be fair, I think it's the largest part of whether a communication is done well or not, but it's not the only factor.

When a reading falls flat, it can be the medium's off day. It can be your state of grief or resistance. It can be a communicator on the spirit side who is harder to receive. Usually when a reading is genuinely struggling it's some combination of all three, which is why honest mediums — and I count myself in this — don't always know exactly what went wrong when a session doesn't land during the time of the reading. It takes a dedicated medium to review each moment and work on their own development to minimize the risk of the reading going off the rails.

What I can do is walk you through all three sides clearly, because you deserve to understand each one.

The Medium's Side

Sleep, stress, health, and emotional state all affect a medium's ability to receive. This isn't mystical — any practitioner whose work requires sustained attention and sensitive perception will tell you the same thing. A medium who is physically depleted, emotionally overwhelmed, or distracted by their own life concerns may have a harder time sustaining the receptive state that mediumship requires. The best mediums I know are disciplined about their own preparation before a reading for this reason. I am too, on my best days.

Skill level and training matter tremendously. Mediumship is a practice, and like any practice it involves both innate ability and developed skill. A medium who has been trained, who works consistently, who receives feedback and holds themselves to an evidential standard will generally produce more specific and reliable results than one who relies solely on natural sensitivity without any structure. This is one of the reasons I work within the EVIDENCE Framework™ — it provides a consistent internal discipline that doesn't depend on what mood I'm in.

And some days are just harder than others. I've had readings where the connection felt like trying to hear someone through a wall. I've had others where the information arrived so clearly and quickly I could barely keep up. I don't fully control which kind of day it is. What I can control is showing up prepared, holding the evidential standard regardless, and being transparent when the signal is weak rather than papering over it with something vague.

Your Side

The client's state affects the reading more than most mediums say clearly enough, so I'm saying it clearly.

Acute grief can make connection easier or harder. Some people in the immediate period of loss bring an openness and raw need that makes the communication feel very present. Others are so overwhelmed they can't take in what's being offered — the medium is essentially working with someone who isn't available to receive. This isn't a criticism. It's just a reality of how devastating fresh loss can be. It's one of the reasons I typically recommend waiting until you feel ready before booking a first reading. How long could that take? For some it's a day after the loss, for others it's 10 years. I trust my clients and spirit to make the best decision for themselves when booking with me.

Skepticism is welcome. Wanting honest evidence, holding a medium accountable, refusing to fill in blanks or help them get there — all of that is healthy and actually makes for better readings. What I observe is different from that: a sitter who has already decided before we start that nothing real is going to happen tends to produce a reading that confirms their conclusion. This is Law of Attraction - and plain old stubbornness - in action.

What I know is that there's a real difference between evaluative skepticism — which sharpens the evidence — and closed hostility, which seems to close something down. The first is a feature. The second is worth being aware of if you've had readings that consistently disappoint you.

Another lesser discussed reason is that the client doesn't actually have a need at the time of the reading. They are simply curious what could be brought through and don't have anything they are hoping to hear because they don't need the direction. The strongest readings come when the need is very present and persistent. It's not that I can't read you if you are simply curious "what comes through", but the reading tends to be aimless without a real need for my energy to detect and hook into.

The Spirit Side

This is the part that's hardest to explain and easiest to abuse, so I want to tread carefully here.

There is genuine variability in how clearly different communicators come through. Some people step forward in sessions with organized, specific, layered information. Others are harder to receive — the impressions are vaguer, more emotionally present than informationally specific, or simply don't have the same definition. People who communicated easily and openly in life often communicate with more clarity in sessions. Those who were guarded or emotionally inaccessible sometimes come through differently, especially in early sessions.

I hold all of that lightly, because I'm aware it's exactly the kind of thing that can be used to excuse a medium who simply didn't connect. "The spirit wasn't ready to communicate" is sometimes a legitimate observation. Unfortunately it's almost always a cover for poor performance. The way to tell the difference: did the medium produce anything specific at all, or was the entire session without verifiable content? A genuinely weak connection looks different from a medium who is guessing and covering with spirit-side explanations. For me, Spirit being any kind of factor in the communication going awry is the last possible explanation. It's just the medium's inability to understand the information Spirit is providing them. That's a failure of development/training on the medium. Or just simply a bad day.

The medium who never has a bad reading, who is always certain, who has an elaborate spiritual reason for why every session was exactly what was needed — that's who to be skeptical of. Certainty is not a sign of quality in this work. Honest variability is.

What to Do When a Reading Doesn't Go Well

Ask the medium directly: what are you receiving and what is unclear? A good evidential medium will tell you honestly when the signal is weak rather than filling the silence with general spiritual content. If they can't offer anything specific in response to that question, the reading isn't working.

A reading that doesn't go well isn't automatically a sign of fraud. It might be the medium's off day. It might be your own state. It might be a communicator who is difficult to receive right now. The honest medium will say so and give you a real assessment of what happened.

An ethical medium will see that the reading isn't going well and often will end the reading early, offering a reschedule to try again or a refund of your money. I used to feel terrible when this happened as I hate disappointing anyone. but I've come to understand that sometimes it's simply not going to work and I own that.

Here's one thing I challenge you to consider in these instances. What really came through in the reading? Could you take all of the information that came through but it just wasn't the one thing you were hoping to hear? That doesn't mean the reading didn't go well and that doesn't mean you should get a refund. The medium can only provide the information that is given to them from the spirit world. If you understand and can validate the information as true and you understand the message, then the medium did their job. Full stop.

What you NEED to hear isn't always what you WANT to hear. That's not a bad reading. That's a flag for you to consider what you might be blocking in your life and the reading that could serve you if you let it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I rebook if a reading went badly? Depends on what badly means. Nothing specific in the entire session — try a different medium first. Some clear hits alongside unclear moments, and you were raw on the day — returning when you're more settled is worth considering. Ask the medium for their honest assessment before you decide.

Is it true that some spirits are harder to reach than others? No, not really. I think that Spirit knows much better than we do when we are ready to connect with them or not. I think the medium sometimes isn't the right medium for that person to come through. And sometimes it's just not the right timing. A lot of this is trust in divine timing.

Does timing since the death affect a reading? No. But your own grief state may make it difficult for you to hear the information that the medium is bringing through. I've had client's who have dismissed the first person who came through in a reading because it wasn't the person they wanted to hear from. And maybe the loved one they wanted to hear from would have been second. Patience in the grieving process can be really difficult.

If you're curious about what an evidential reading actually looks like in practice, I offer 45-minute private sessions via Zoom. Evidence first — always.
